Seoul and Busan sit at opposite ends of Korea, but the country is small and superbly connected — so the trip between them is easy, fast, and cheap by international standards. The distance is about 325km, and for almost everyone the answer is the same: take the high-speed train. But there are a few options worth knowing, plus one situation the guides usually skip — getting to Busan straight from the airport when you land. Here’s the full picture.
The four ways to make the trip
KTX — the default, and the right choice for most people. Korea’s flagship high-speed train covers Seoul to Busan in about 2 hours 30 minutes, city center to city center, for roughly ₩60,000. It’s the fastest and most frequent option, departing every 15–30 minutes from Seoul Station straight to Busan Station. You can book on the Korail / KorailTalk app in English. For the vast majority of travelers, this is simply the answer.
SRT — the same speed, slightly cheaper. The SRT is a competing high-speed service running the same route at essentially the same speed, for a bit less — around ₩52,600. The key difference is where it leaves from: the SRT departs from Suseo Station in southeast Seoul, not Seoul Station. So if you’re staying near Gangnam or southeast Seoul, the SRT can be both cheaper and more convenient. If you’re in central or northern Seoul, the KTX from Seoul Station is easier.
Express bus — the cheapest, if you’re not in a hurry. Intercity buses run Seoul to Busan for around ₩35,000, taking roughly 4.5 hours. Worth it only if you’re on a tight budget or specifically prefer buses; the train’s speed usually wins.
Flight — rarely worth it between these two. There are flights (Gimpo to Gimhae) and the air time is only about an hour, but once you add getting to the airport, security, boarding, and getting from Gimhae into Busan, the train’s city-center-to-city-center convenience almost always beats it. Flying makes sense mainly if you happen to be near the airports on both ends.
The bottom line on which to take
For almost everyone: take the train. Choose KTX from Seoul Station if you’re central or north; choose SRT from Suseo if you’re near Gangnam or the southeast. Both get you there in about 2.5 hours in comfort, with big windows and plenty of space. Book ahead during peak seasons (cherry blossom spring, autumn foliage, and major holidays), when popular departure times sell out.
Landing at the airport and heading straight to Busan?
This is the scenario most guides ignore: you’re flying into Korea but Busan is your real destination. You have two smart plays.
Option A: fly straight into Busan. Busan has its own international airport — Gimhae (PUS). If your route allows it, flying directly into Gimhae skips Seoul entirely, and from there the light rail plus subway reaches the Haeundae beach area in about an hour. If Busan is your main goal, check for flights into PUS before you default to booking Incheon.
Option B: you’ve landed at Incheon (ICN). Two ways south:
- Direct KTX from the airport. Some KTX trains run right from Incheon Airport toward Busan, so you don’t have to enter Seoul first — check the schedule, since these are less frequent.
- Airport → Seoul Station → KTX. Take the AREX airport train to Seoul Station (about 43–60 minutes depending on express vs all-stop), then catch a Busan KTX. This is the most frequent, most flexible route.
One honest tip: if you’re landing late and jet-lagged, don’t try to cross the whole country the same night. Sleep in Seoul, and take the train fresh the next morning — you’ll actually enjoy the arrival into Busan instead of arriving wrecked.
